Fluorite has a higher specific gravity (3.18) compared to quartz (2.65) and calcite (2.71). Gravity separation techniques like jigging, tabling, or dense media separation can be applied, though they are less precise compared to flotation.
While fluorite is non-magnetic, gangue minerals like quartz and certain impurities might exhibit magnetic properties. If associated gangue minerals are weakly magnetic, they can be removed using magnetic separators.
Chemical treatments can be used to dissolve calcite (CaCO3) selectively without affecting fluorite (CaF2). Acid leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) can remove calcite effectively, but care must be taken to avoid excessive fluorite dissolution.
Quartz can often be separated in earlier stages using acidic conditions and collectors selective for silicates. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) or fluoride salts can be added as activators for quartz flotation (depending on local regulations and safety concerns).
A combination of flotation (with selective depressants and collectors) and acid leaching is generally the most effective strategy for separating fluorite from calcite or quartz.
When using flotation agents or acids, always comply with environmental regulations and safety standards, as some chemicals can be hazardous.
