5. Matte Smelting

• The concentrated ore is mixed with a flux (usually silica) and fed into a smelter, where it is heated to very high temperatures (around 1200°C).
• During smelting, the silica (SiO₂) reacts with iron to form an iron silicate slag, which floats on top and is removed. The molten copper and other sulfides (matte) collect at the bottom.
• The copper matte typically contains 30-70% copper.

6. Converting

• The matte is transferred to a converter furnace, where oxygen is blown through the molten matte.
• The sulfur is further oxidized to sulfur dioxide (SO₂), which is captured and converted into sulfuric acid in many modern plants.
• Iron is removed as slag, and blister copper (about 98-99% pure copper) is produced.

7. Refining

The blister copper is refined to produce pure copper:

• Fire Refining: Involves removing impurities such as sulfur and iron by oxidation in a furnace, producing about 99.5-99.7% pure copper.
