Efficient purification of quartz sand can be achieved using high-gradient magnetic separation (HGMS) or strong magnetic separation techniques. These processes are particularly effective in removing minute quantities of magnetic impurities (e.g., iron-bearing minerals like hematite, magnetite, and other paramagnetic or ferromagnetic particles) from quartz sand.
HGMS involves the use of a high-intensity magnetic field coupled with a matrix (such as steel wool or expanded metal mesh) that creates localized high gradients in the magnetic field. When quartz sand passes through the magnetic field, any magnetic or paramagnetic impurities in the sand are attracted to the matrix and separated from the non-magnetic quartz particles.
HGMS is typically favored for its ability to refine quartz sand into high-purity material, suitable for applications like glass manufacturing and silicon production.
When quartz sand contains larger or relatively coarse magnetic impurities, strong permanent magnets or electromagnetic separators can be employed to separate the impurities from the quartz effectively. These separators generally use drum magnetic separators, roll-type magnetic separators, or belt separators.
Both HGMS and strong magnetic separation are effective, depending on the particle size and type of impurities in the quartz sand. Often, these processes are integrated with additional methods such as froth flotation, scrubbing, and acid leaching to achieve ultra-pure quartz sand.
