Recovering gold from arsenic-contaminated ores presents challenges due to the toxic nature of arsenic. However, several flotation techniques have been developed to recover gold safely while managing arsenic contamination. Here are three effective methods:
Selective flotation involves separating gold-bearing minerals from arsenic-containing minerals based on differences in their surface properties. The process typically includes modifying reagents and pH levels to ensure gold minerals (e.g., native gold, electrum, or gold sulfides) are floated, while arsenic-containing minerals (e.g., arsenopyrite and realgar) are suppressed. Specific reagents such as depressants and collectors are tailored to minimize arsenic contamination in the concentrate.
In this approach, depressants are used to selectively suppress arsenic-rich minerals (like arsenopyrite) without affecting the flotation of gold. Depressants, which may include organic compounds or inorganic salts like lime or xanthates, prevent arsenic minerals from adhering to air bubbles, enabling gold to be recovered with reduced arsenic content.
Pre-oxidation involves oxidizing arsenic minerals before flotation to reduce their surface activity. This can improve the selectivity of gold flotation and suppress arsenic. Oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium permanganate (KMnO4), or air oxidation are used to oxidize arsenic minerals, making them less likely to interfere during gold recovery.
These methods help minimize arsenic content in the final gold concentrate, reducing environmental and health risks. However, safety precautions must be taken when handling. Additionally, subsequent steps, such as roasting or pressure oxidation, may be required to further isolate gold while mitigating arsenic-related hazards.
