Flake graphite can be used to produce high carbon graphite, high purity graphite, expandable graphite and spherical graphite after improving its purity. There are two chemical processing for improving the purity of flake graphite include acid washing or alkali fusion together with acid washing. Beofore doing the chemical purification process, the flotation and washing should be done first for some time and try to improve the fixed carbon content as higher as possible.
To avoid using hydrofluoric acid and remove the SiO2 content in graphite, the alkali fusion processing is the priproty choice. The acid washing is also necessary to remove other impurity after alkali fusion without using the HF acid. The high temperature reactor should be adopted for alkali fusion process at the temperature around 650-700℃.
If the alkali fusion processing fails to make the graphite purity to reach 99.95% above, the mixed acid washing should be considered to choose and the HF acid is necessary to remove the quartz content. The high temperature reactor is suitable undertaking high temperature acid washing and the deionized water washing. The plastic acid washing tank is suitable for low temperature washing.
We can also consider to use the rotary pickling reactor to undertake the acid washing process. It also can handle the water washing work and drying work. The reactor drum is rotarying during its operation which can help improve the working efficiency.
For making the expandable graphite, the flake graphite should be prcocessed in the acid and oxidation agent solution for some time at suitable temperature. We have done a lot of test work on the graphite from China and Africa and the datas is as below: The preparation of +0.3mm size graphite from China. The expansion times of the expansible graphite: 320ml/g. The preparation of +0.3mm size graphite from Mozambique. The expansion times of the expansible graphite: 300ml/g.
For undertaking the washing work after chemical treatment, the high purifity deionized water should be used. For making the high purity deionized water, the reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system is necessary to choose. The water before entering the ROM system, the active carbon filtration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration work should be done first.
