Recovering gold from antimony-rich ores is complex due to the chemical association of gold with antimony-bearing minerals, such as stibnite (Sb2S3). Here are four flotation processes that have been identified as effective for treating such ores:
Bulk Flotation: This process involves the simultaneous flotation of both gold and antimony minerals. The bulk concentrate is later subjected to additional processing to separate the two resources. Collectors such as xanthates and frothers are often used to enhance the flotation of both gold and stibnite.
Selective Flotation: This process leverages the differences in the surface properties of gold- and antimony-bearing minerals to selectively float one over the other. Specialized reagents, such as depressants and activators, can aid in the selective separation, allowing recovery of either gold or antimony before the other.
Refractory Ore Flotation with Pre-Treatment: For refractory antimony-rich ores where gold is finely disseminated within stibnite, pre-treatment techniques such as ultrafine grinding, roasting, or bio-oxidation are applied before flotation. These methods expose gold particles, making them more amenable to recovery.
Sequential Flotation: In this approach, gold and antimony minerals are floated in separate stages. The flotation circuits are adjusted such that one mineral (e.g., gold) is floated first, while the other (e.g., antimony) remains suppressed, followed by a second flotation stage where the suppressed mineral is floated.
The effectiveness of these flotation processes depends on the mineralogical characteristics of the ore, the association between gold and antimony minerals, and the pH and reagents used in the flotation system. In practice, a combination of methods and customized reagent schemes is often employed to achieve optimal recovery rates for both gold and antimony.
